The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued an unidentified mentally challenged woman who delivered a baby girl by the roadside in Kwaita Village, Kwali Area Council of Abuja.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, April 3, 2026, at about 12:30 a.m., was swiftly responded to by officers of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) on patrol in the Kwali axis, following a distress report.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the Officer in Charge of the Gender Unit, Kwali Division, immediately mobilized to the scene alongside her team upon receiving the information.

“The mother and her newborn were safely rescued and immediately conveyed to General Hospital, Kwali, where they received medical attention and were subsequently discharged in stable condition,” the statement said.

The police further disclosed that, in line with established welfare protocols, the Officer in Charge of Welfare in Kwali Area Council, Mr. Sadiq Kwali, was contacted to take over the care of the mother and child.

“They have since been relocated to the FCT Children’s Home in Wako, Gwagwalada Area Council, where they will receive proper care, protection, and support,” the statement added.

Commending the officers involved, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, lauded their prompt and compassionate response to the situation. He noted that the patrol team, though comprising male personnel, demonstrated professionalism and empathy in assisting the woman and ensuring the safety of the newborn before the arrival of the Gender Unit.

The Police Commissioner also called on residents of the FCT to remain vigilant, show empathy to vulnerable individuals, and promptly report emergencies or persons in distress to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency lines.

The rescue highlights ongoing efforts by the FCT Police Command to strengthen emergency response mechanisms and enhance social protection for vulnerable persons across the territory.

Authorities have continued to emphasise the importance of timely reporting by members of the public, particularly in cases involving individuals in distress, including mentally challenged persons found in public spaces.
