President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday received Chad’s President, Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, at the State House in Abuja for high-level security discussions.

Déby arrived at the Presidential Villa around 2 p.m. for his first official visit to Nigeria since Tinubu attended his inauguration in N’Djamena on May 23, 2024.

Both leaders are expected to focus on strengthening regional security cooperation, particularly in the fight against Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists operating across the Lake Chad Basin, which includes Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon.

Chad remains a key partner in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts in the region.

The meeting also comes amid shifts in the regional security landscape following Chad’s withdrawal from French military agreements and the exit of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger from the G5 Sahel and ECOWAS.

Nigeria and Chad share longstanding historical, cultural, economic ties, including strong collaboration on cross-border trade and joint security operations.
