The University of Uyo Alumni Association has condemned the alleged exclusion and maltreatment of three Ibibio Language graduates during a recent civil service recruitment exercise in Akwa Ibom State.
In a press release issued on April 1, 2026, and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Thomas Thomas, the association described the reported incident as troubling, unacceptable.
According to the statement, the affected graduates had successfully completed all stages of the recruitment process, including registration on the ARISE portal and passing the required e-examinations, but were allegedly denied access to the final interview at the Civil Service Auditorium, Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat in Uyo.
The association claimed the candidates were disqualified solely based on their academic background in Ibibio Language and were reportedly subjected to disparaging remarks and public ridicule by members of the interview panel.
It noted that if verified, such actions would amount to a breach of professional ethics and undermine the integrity of the recruitment process.
The alumni body emphasized that Ibibio Language is a critical academic discipline that contributes to cultural preservation and effective communication, particularly in grassroots governance.
“The exclusion of qualified candidates on the basis of their field of study is not only unjust but counterproductive to inclusive governance and efficient service delivery,” the statement read.
While commending Governor Umo Eno for promoting merit-based recruitment under the ARISE initiative, the association warned that the alleged actions of some officials could undermine the administration’s efforts.

It called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the matter to ensure accountability and prevent future occurrences.
The association also urged stakeholders involved in the recruitment process to uphold professionalism, fairness, and respect for all candidates, regardless of their academic discipline.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to defending the rights and dignity of its members and promoting excellence across all fields of study.
