The United States has indicated that the ongoing conflict with Iran may be approaching a decisive phase, as diplomatic signals intensify alongside continued military operations.

US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, disclosed that Washington can now “see the finish line” in the war, which has entered its fifth week. However, he cautioned that the end is not imminent, noting that negotiations, strategic engagements are still ongoing.

The conflict, which began on February 28 following coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets, has since escalated into a broader regional crisis. Iran retaliated with attacks on Israeli positions and Gulf states hosting US military bases, resulting in significant casualties and widespread displacement.

Speaking during a televised interview, Rubio confirmed that indirect communication channels between the US and Iran remain active, with the possibility of direct talks under consideration.

“There are messages being exchanged… there is the potential for a direct meeting at some point,” he stated.

Meanwhile, US President, Donald Trump suggested that military operations could wind down within two to three weeks, depending on developments on the ground.

Beyond the battlefield, the war is already reshaping global alliances. Rubio revealed that Washington may reassess its relationship with NATO after the conflict, citing concerns over limited support from European allies.

He expressed dissatisfaction with what he described as a “one-way security arrangement,” where the US continues to defend Europe while facing restrictions such as denied access to military bases and airspace during critical operations.

European nations have largely refrained from direct military involvement in the conflict, opting instead for diplomatic and humanitarian support.

The war has also had far-reaching economic implications, including rising global oil prices and increased volatility in international markets developments that could have indirect effects on oil-dependent economies like Nigeria.

As the situation evolves, analysts say the coming weeks will be critical in determining not only the outcome of the conflict but also the future of global security alliances.
