Fresh political realignments appear to be underway ahead of the 2027 general elections, as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) intensifies moves to build a broad opposition coalition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Sources within the ADC revealed that the party is currently in talks with leaders of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), in what is seen as a strategic effort to consolidate opposition forces into a formidable platform.
Key political figures linked to the emerging alliance include Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, and former Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Seriake Dickson. Insiders say discussions are also ongoing with members of a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Tanimu Turaki.
According to a source familiar with the negotiations, the plan is to reposition the NDC as a strong opposition bloc that can collectively negotiate its entry into the ADC, rather than individual defections.
“We have established that Makinde and Dickson are not aligned with President Bola Tinubu. Some PDP leaders loyal to them are also expected to move to the NDC. This will strengthen their bargaining power as a group in discussions with the ADC,” the source said.
The source further disclosed that Governor Bala Mohammed’s reported hesitation to defect to the APC is tied to his association with key figures in the proposed alliance, including Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Makinde, and Dickson.
“All of them are influential politicians and share a common objective to build a united front capable of challenging the APC in 2027,” the source added.
The coalition, according to insiders, is driven by a shared goal of unseating President Tinubu, with critics of the current administration citing economic hardship and governance concerns as rallying points.
“Our collective objective is to bring an end to Tinubu’s administration. Whatever it takes, we must work together and accommodate one another’s interests,” another ADC insider stated.
However, the APC has dismissed the emerging alliance as politically insignificant. The party’s National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, downplayed the threat posed by the opposition figures, particularly former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, who is reportedly set to join the ADC.

“Kwankwaso is free to move to any party he wants. That is the beauty of democracy. But he is not a threat to us or to President Tinubu’s re-election,” Basiru said.
He argued that the former governor lacks the political structure to mount a serious challenge, noting his limited electoral victories in the 2023 general elections.

The development signals growing political maneuvering and coalition-building among opposition figures as the race toward the 2027 elections gradually takes shape.
