President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees under his administration who intend to contest elective positions in the 2027 general elections to resign from their offices on or before March 31, 2026.

The directive was contained in a circular issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and signed by the SGF, Sen. George Akume.

The statement was released by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana.

According to the circular, the directive is in line with the provisions of Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries ahead of the polls.

The resignation requirement applies to a broad category of presidential appointees, including ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, directors-general, and chief executive officers of federal parastatals, agencies, commissions, and government-owned companies, as well as other political appointees.

Affected officials are expected to submit their resignation letters through the Office of the SGF within the stipulated deadline.

President Tinubu stated that the measure is aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral laws, promoting transparency in the political process, and guaranteeing a level playing field for all aspirants.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and supporting credible electoral processes in the country.
