Toyota Motor Corporation has announced a recall of more than 550,000 vehicles in the United States due to a potential defect in the seat-back mechanism that could increase the risk of injury.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall affects about 550,007 units of the Toyota Highlander and Toyota Highlander Hybrid produced between 2021 and 2024.

Regulators said the issue involves the second-row seat backs, which may fail to properly lock into position when adjusted. If the seat does not secure correctly, it could pose a safety risk to passengers during a collision or sudden movement.

To address the problem, dealers will replace the return springs in the seat-back recliner assembly at no cost to vehicle owners.

The recall forms part of ongoing safety oversight by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which monitors vehicle defects and enforces safety standards across the US automotive industry.

Toyota has not reported widespread injuries related to the issue, however says the recall is a precautionary measure to ensure passenger safety.
