Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has warned that village heads will be held accountable for acts of vandalism and destruction of government property within their communities.

The Governor issued the warning during the State Government House Monthly Prayer Service held at the Latter House Chapel, Government House, Uyo.

Governor Eno stated that any community where government facilities are vandalised would face strict consequences, including the possible withdrawal of the village head’s certificate of recognition.

“Any village that has government presence and there is vandalism of government property, we will withdraw the certificate of the village head,” he declared.

He questioned the relevance of traditional leadership in communities where public facilities, including well-equipped schools, are destroyed by hoodlums without resistance.

“If a public school, well furnished with modern facilities by the government, can be conveniently vandalised in your locality, what is the usefulness of the village head there?” the Governor queried.

He directed the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mkpisong Frank Archibong, and the State Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, to urgently convene a meeting with village heads across the state to communicate the government’s position.

Governor Eno also called on residents to be security-conscious and take collective responsibility for safeguarding public infrastructure and commonwealth.

On plans to provide mini water projects in each ward of the state, the Governor said the initiative would be executed through the Inter-Ministerial Direct Labour Committee.

He directed the committee to involve his Personal Assistants in all wards to ensure effective implementation.
