African Democratic Congress vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi has described the 2027 presidential election as a choice between “life and death,” arguing that President Bola Tinubu represents what he called the “choice of death.”

Amaechi, a former Rivers State governor and former Minister of Transportation, made the remarks on Friday while criticising the Tinubu administration over the cost of living and the impact of its economic policies.

He said Nigerians should assess the government’s performance by examining whether the cost of essential goods and services had fallen and whether living conditions had improved.

“We don’t have two choices but just one to make: the choice to be alive, because Tinubu’s presidency is the choice of death,” Amaechi said.

He cited transportation costs, rent, taxes and the price of medicines among the financial pressures confronting households.

Amaechi said some workers were spending a significant portion of their earnings on transportation, questioning whether recent economic policies had translated into meaningful improvements in disposable income.

He also raised concerns about housing costs and access to medicines, arguing that increases in wages could have limited impact if other household expenses continued to rise.

The comments form part of Amaechi’s criticism of Tinubu’s economic record as campaigning intensifies ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Amaechi is the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the ADC presidential candidate. The ticket was formally announced by the party in June.

During the same interview, Amaechi challenged the administration over petrol prices, saying he was prepared to withdraw as Atiku’s running mate and campaign for Tinubu if petrol sold for ₦600 per litre.

He said he would personally visit a filling station to verify the price.

“If fuel has come down to 600, I will campaign for President Tinubu,” Amaechi said.

He added that if the price reached that level, he would withdraw from the ADC ticket and support the President’s re-election bid.

The remarks were made as Amaechi questioned whether the administration’s economic reforms, particularly the removal of the petrol subsidy, had resulted in lower living costs for Nigerians.

Amaechi’s characterisation of the election as a choice between “life and death” represents his political assessment of the Tinubu administration and its policies ahead of the 2027 contest.
