The sorting and counting of votes have begun across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Saturday’s Area Council elections, following a voting process marked by low turnout and allegations of vote-buying in Gwagwalada.

Security operatives were stationed at strategic junctions and polling units across Abuja, enforcing movement restrictions, conducting stop-and-search operations ahead of and during the elections. Authorities said the measures were intended to ensure a peaceful and credible process, but many residents said the restrictions discouraged participation.

At several polling units in Kubwa, Bwari, and Gwagwalada, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials attended to only a few voters compared to previous elections. Some early voters expressed frustration over delays and confusion surrounding movement within their communities.

In Nyanya and Gwagwalada, security patrol vehicles moved intermittently, with armed personnel maintaining visible surveillance around voting centres.

Although no major violence was reported, the atmosphere remained tense during the early hours of the exercise.

Some residents blamed the curfew for the low voter turnout, saying it created uncertainty about when movement was allowed. “People were not sure if they could come out freely. Many decided to stay back to avoid any issues with security agents,” one voter who asked not to be named said.

An incident occurred at Liberty Junction in Byazhin, Kubwa, where armed policemen prevented residents, particularly vehicle users, from reaching polling units.

A mechanic was arrested after being found with a military camouflage in his vehicle.

The mechanic explained that the items belonged to a military officer client, but the police insisted he report to the station alongside the vehicle for identification.

Election observers noted that while compliance with movement restrictions appeared high, the measures had the side effect of reducing voter enthusiasm.

The absence of political party agents was also observed in some polling units.

Security officials reiterated that the restrictions were preventive and necessary to forestall any breakdown of law and order, urging residents to cooperate and exercise their civic responsibilities peacefully.
