Vehicular movement was brought to a standstill around Karu Bridge on Saturday following restrictions imposed by soldiers as part of security arrangements for the ongoing Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The restriction triggered heavy traffic congestion around midday, leaving commuters travelling between Karu and the Abuja city centre stranded.
A correspondent on election duty observed that military personnel had blocked sections of the road around 12 noon, leading to a buildup of vehicles on both sides of the bridge.
Commuters heading towards the city centre as well as those travelling to Karu were affected by the development, including accredited election officials on assignment.
At the scene, about four military Hilux vehicles were stationed on the road, with armed personnel positioned around them. Some motorists attempting to access the city centre were compelled to turn back towards Karu, while others moving in the opposite direction were redirected.
Several vehicles remained trapped in the gridlock as frustration mounted among commuters awaiting the lifting of the restriction.
Security agencies had earlier deployed personnel to strategic locations across the FCT to maintain order during the elections.
However, the movement restriction at Karu Bridge significantly disrupted traffic flow in the area.
