Britain’s monarch, Charles III, has declared that “the law must take its course” following the arrest of his younger brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
In a statement released through Buckingham Palace on Thursday, the King emphasized that the matter would be handled through “the full, fair and proper process” by the appropriate authorities. He added that it would be inappropriate for him to comment further while investigations are ongoing.
Thames Valley Police confirmed the arrest of a man in his sixties from Norfolk and disclosed that searches were conducted at properties in Berkshire and Norfolk. While British police customarily refrain from naming suspects, officers confirmed the individual remains in custody. Norfolk Police said it is assisting with the inquiry.
The arrest reportedly followed allegations that Andrew, during his tenure as the United Kingdom’s trade envoy, shared confidential government documents with late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The claims emerged from correspondence contained in documents recently disclosed by the United States Department of Justice.
Authorities are also said to be reviewing other allegations connected to Andrew’s past association with Epstein. The former royal has consistently denied wrongdoing.
The development has reignited scrutiny of Andrew’s long-standing relationship with Epstein, which first drew widespread public attention following a 2019 interview on Newsnight, where he denied allegations made against him. In 2022, he settled a civil lawsuit brought by one of Epstein’s accusers without admitting liability and was subsequently stripped of his military titles and royal patronages.
British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer has reiterated that no individual is above the law, stating that anyone with relevant information should cooperate with authorities.
Buckingham Palace maintained that while the specific allegations concern Andrew personally, the Royal Family would fully cooperate with law enforcement if required.
The arrest marks a significant moment for the British monarchy, as investigators continue to examine the allegations surrounding the Duke of York.
