The United States Department of Justice has sent a letter to lawmakers outlining redactions made in files related to convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein, according to a report by Politico.
The letter, which is required by law, provides a general description of the types of redactions applied to the documents. It also includes a list of notable individuals mentioned in the files in any capacity.
According to the report, the correspondence contains an extensive list of high-profile or “politically exposed persons” referenced in the records. Some of the individuals named may not have had direct interactions with Epstein or his longtime associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, but were cited in materials such as press clippings or other sources included in the files.
The letter was sent to the leaders of the Senate and House Judiciary Committees. It does not specify the context in which any listed individual’s name appears.
The Justice Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the matter.
The disclosure comes amid continued public and congressional scrutiny over the handling, transparency and release of records connected to Epstein’s criminal activities and associates.
