The National Peace Committee (NPC) has stepped up its election peacebuilding efforts with a strategic advocacy visit to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
The engagement comes ahead of the forthcoming Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council Elections, the off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States, and as preparations gradually intensify for the 2027 general elections.
The NPC delegation, led by its Head of Secretariat, Rev. Fr. Atta Barkindo, Ph.D., presented key findings from the Committee’s Election Security Information (ESI) Hub analysis.
The briefing highlighted emerging security and social risk indicators, including identified hotspots across Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Bwari, Kuje and Gwagwalada Area Councils.
According to the Committee, the discussions focused on strengthening early warning systems, addressing the growing risks of vote-buying, managing communal tensions and enhancing coordinated mitigation strategies to protect the credibility and integrity of the electoral process.
Rev. Fr. Barkindo stressed the importance of proactive engagement and collaboration among electoral bodies, security agencies and civil society to prevent avoidable crises during elections.
He noted that timely intelligence sharing and targeted interventions are critical to ensuring peaceful and violence-free polls.
In his response, INEC Chairman, Prof. Amupitan, welcomed the advisory and commended the NPC for its continued role in promoting peaceful elections.
He assured the delegation that the intelligence provided would be reviewed, shared with relevant security agencies for necessary action.
