Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the need for political stability and stronger collaboration with the Federal Government.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Director General of Media and Communication in the Governor’s Office, Nuhu Salihu Anka, on Monday.

According to the statement, the governor’s decision followed extensive consultations with political stakeholders, elders, party leaders and supporters across Zamfara State.

The government explained that the move was largely influenced by the prolonged internal crisis within the PDP at both national and state levels, which it said has created uncertainty and distractions capable of affecting effective governance in the state.

“After careful consideration and in the overriding interest of stability, progress and the sustainable development of Zamfara State, His Excellency, Dauda Lawal, has decided to formally defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC),” the statement said.

It added that the governor believes aligning with the APC will provide greater unity and strengthen cooperation with the Federal Government to deliver more development to the people of Zamfara.

The final decision was reportedly reached during a meeting held at the Government House in Gusau, coordinated by the Deputy Governor alongside senior government officials and key political stakeholders.

Governor Lawal also expressed appreciation to members and supporters of the PDP for their support during his time in the party, but noted that the unresolved leadership disputes within the party made the move necessary.

He reaffirmed his commitment to improving security, strengthening unity and accelerating development in Zamfara State under his new political platform.

The state government called on residents, political leaders and supporters to remain calm and peaceful as the state transitions into what it described as a new political phase aimed at promoting unity and progress.
