Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) has strongly refuted allegations by Dr. Eyo Etim of the Department of English, accusing him instead of mutilating students’ results while serving as Examination Officer.
In a statement signed by the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Otoabasi E. Akpan, the university described Dr. Etim’s claims including victimisation, tribal bias, denial of promotion and 14 months of unpaid salaries, as “false, misleading and mere figments of his imagination.”
The university said Dr. Etim was denied promotion due to serious infractions that violated institutional regulations and international academic best practices.
According to the statement, although Dr. Etim was regarded as academically brilliant, he allegedly “mutilated students’ results,” an offence described by the institution as gross misconduct under its Conditions of Service.
AKSU disclosed that a committee was set up to investigate the matter, but the lecturer tendered a resignation before the panel concluded its work.
The university said the resignation was not processed because the investigation was still ongoing.

While stressing that Dr. Etim remains innocent until proven guilty, AKSU said it could not promote him while an allegation of such moral and academic gravity remains before the Governing Council.
The university also dismissed his claim of being owed 14 months’ salary, insisting that he is not owed any salary or allowance.
On accusations of tribalism and oppression, the institution maintained that it operates a committee-driven, multicultural system and does not discriminate based on tribe, religion, or gender.
Professor Akpan further stated that all staff due for promotion in 2025 have already received their promotion letters following successful appraisal and approvals by the Central Appointments and Promotions Committee.
