Wisdom Gate International School in Port Harcourt has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of a child in its care, extending condolences to the bereaved family.
In a public statement issued by the management, the school described the incident as heartbreaking and assured the family of its sympathy during the difficult period.
According to the statement, the child was immediately attended to after the incident and taken for urgent medical care. The school added that the matter was promptly reported and that it is cooperating fully with the relevant authorities to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation.
The management acknowledged the concerns raised by parents and members of the public, stressing that the safety and well-being of every child entrusted to the institution remain its highest priority.
“We wish to assure all concerned that the safety and well-being of every child entrusted to us remain our highest priority. We continue to uphold and reinforce established safety standards and protocols,” the statement said.
The school further stated that it remains committed to openness and accountability, emphasizing that it has not withheld any information from the authorities handling the matter.
However, the management noted that out of respect for the grieving family and the ongoing process, it would refrain from making further public comments for now, while remaining open to lawful and constructive engagement.
The management extended their prayers and thoughts for the family during what it described as a very difficult time.
Their reaction came following a viral video posted on Wednesday morning by a social media commentator known as Certified Courtist, it was alleged that the toddler was dropped off at school by her parents on March 17 in what should have been a routine day.
Hours later, at about 3 p.m., the family reportedly received a shocking call, their child was dead.
“The school called, informing them that the child is dead. They tried to inquire what happened,” the commentator said.
However, what followed, according to the narration, was a series of conflicting explanations and alleged attempts to conceal the true cause of the child’s death.
“The school first lied and said that books fell on the child and killed the child. The story didn’t just add up. How can books fall on a child and kill the child?” he questioned.
Subsequent findings reportedly revealed that a poorly mounted bookshelf had collapsed while the child was sleeping. The shelf, which had allegedly not been properly secured to the wall, fell directly on the toddler who had been laid beneath it on a mat.
“The bookshelf fell on the child, broke her skull, and killed her instantly,” the commentator said, adding that the child bled severely before dying.
Even more troubling were claims that the school failed to immediately notify the parents. Instead, the child was reportedly rushed to multiple hospitals, where she was confirmed dead, before the family was eventually informed.
The management has however, taken responsibility of the incident and assured readiness to corporate with authorities and family for further investigation.
