The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed allegations by Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, accusing him of engineering political crises in the state.
Governor Mohammed, while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, alleged that Wike had vowed to “put fire” in Bauchi and was now using federal agencies, political influence to destabilize his administration.
He also criticised Wike’s governance style in Abuja, describing his spending pattern as questionable, portraying the Minister as a major source of discord within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
However, Wike, speaking during a “thank you” visit to Abua-Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State, rejected the accusations, describing them as an attempt by the Bauchi Governor to deflect blame from his own political challenges.
The former Rivers State Governor insisted that Mohammed’s political troubles were self-inflicted, stemming from internal party issues within the PDP in Bauchi.
“Go and face your problem. You came to my state, I said, ‘Be careful, leave my state alone.’ You want to impose a party leader in my state. Today, he doesn’t have a party to bring his successor,” he stated.
Wike recalled warning some PDP leaders against attempting to control party structures in states where they lacked influence, arguing that the current disarray in Bauchi was a consequence of ignoring such advice.
Responding to claims that he was behind alleged Economic and Financial Crimes Commission pressure on some Bauchi officials, Wike distanced himself from the anti-graft agency, cautioned against politicizing law-enforcement actions.
“Now EFCC is chasing them, he said it’s me. What’s my business? If your state is clean, go there and enjoy yourself,” he said.
The Minister maintained that his disagreements with Governor Mohammed were strictly about party leadership matters, not governance or personal finances.
“So this is just to tell Nigerians, tell them to leave me alone; go and face your problems. I’m only fighting with you as party leadership. I’m not interested in what you spend,” Wike added.
He also challenged Mohammed to account for his tenure as FCT minister between 2010 and 2015 before criticizing the current administration.
“You said I’m spending badly. You were Minister of FCT from 2010 to 2015. Why not tell the people what you did in the FCT? You sold the whole land. Do the roads, you awarded contracts, they collected upfront, and now I’m the one completing the projects,” Wike said.
Wike argued that Nigerians were more focused on evaluating his performance than on political accusations.
“Nigerians are singing our names every day that we have done well. And we will continue to do well,” he declared.
He concluded with a sarcastic remark, dismissing claims that he was responsible for political crises nationwide.
