President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity across Nigeria, stating that efforts to protect citizens will not be overshadowed by ongoing initiatives to support vulnerable groups.
Speaking on Sunday while hosting Vice President Kashim Shettima and 23 state governors at his Lagos residence for Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, the President said security concerns were a major focus during his recent meetings in the United Kingdom.
“The next phase of our struggle is the challenge of insecurity in the country,” Tinubu said. “Insecurity is an enemy of development, progress, and prosperity.”
He disclosed that discussions with international partners, including French President, Emmanuel Macron, centred on securing modern equipment and support to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.
“I have committed to strengthening the necessary contacts and networks. One of the major discussions in the United Kingdom was on equipment and support. I also had a lengthy discussion with President Macron, and they are collaborating with us,” he added.
President Tinubu, who recently returned from a three-day state visit to the UK where he met King Charles III and Prime Minister Keir Starmer said his administration is also engaging other nations to bolster security capacity.
Addressing economic concerns, the President warned that the ongoing Middle East crisis could worsen inflation and reduce purchasing power, urging governors to introduce measures to cushion the impact on citizens.
“We should care more for the vulnerable,” he said, noting that rising energy and transportation costs may increase pressure on government support systems.
Tinubu called on state governors to remain resilient in implementing policies that directly improve citizens’ lives and to work collaboratively with the federal government in confronting criminal elements.
He also commended Vice President Shettima for his recent condolence visit to Borno State, assuring residents of enhanced protection through the deployment of new security technologies.
In his remarks, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, praised the President’s leadership and the Renewed Hope Agenda, while highlighting ongoing discussions on the establishment of state police.
“Together, we must ensure that insecurity comes to an end,” AbdulRazaq said, adding that the NGF would present its position on state policing to the National Assembly for legislative action.
He also congratulated the President on the successful UK state visit, describing it as a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations after 37 years.
The meeting was attended by governors from across the federation, alongside senior government officials.
