The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Abeokuta, Prof. Fatiu Arogundade, has advised newly admitted students to avoid unlawful associations, uphold discipline, and refrain from any conduct capable of jeopardising their future in the institution.

Prof. Arogundade gave the charge on Thursday during the matriculation of the university’s pioneering 1,000 students held at the Prof. Olufemi Balogun Ceremonial Building of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, which currently serves as the temporary campus.

Addressing the new students, the VC urged them to maximise the opportunity offered by the institution to acquire relevant skills and competencies. He also emphasised the need for strict obedience to rules, authorities, and officials, stressing that any form of misconduct could threaten their studentship.

He described the matriculation as a significant moment for the institution and a reflection of Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening health education and national development.

He said, “As I rejoice with you for being part of this historic moment, I charge you to focus on your studies and refrain from associating with unlawful groups. FUMMSA is a place for character building. It is a specialised institution established to strengthen the medical and health profession with clear ethical expectations.”

Prof. Arogundade also disclosed that the university would be developing curricula in emerging programmes to meet national priorities in various medical specialties.

The VC commended President Bola Tinubu for establishing specialised universities of medical sciences across the six geopolitical zones, noting that the initiative will boost manpower production and enhance quality healthcare delivery nationwide.

He added that the move would help reduce the impact of the “Japa” syndrome by increasing the number of health workers trained annually.

According to him, FUMMSA’s philosophy of medical education goes beyond skill acquisition to combining intellect, empathy, and innovation. He stated that the university is committed to training competent health professionals equipped to tackle national and global health challenges using creative and technology-driven solutions.
