The United States and Venezuela have agreed to re-establish diplomatic and consular relations, according to a statement released by the US State Department.

Officials said the move is intended to support political stability and economic recovery in Venezuela while creating conditions for a peaceful transition toward a democratically elected government.

The agreement follows months of tensions between the two countries after Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was captured in January. Following that development, Delcy Rodríguez was sworn in as interim President.

The US State Department said renewed diplomatic engagement would help facilitate efforts aimed at promoting stability and political reconciliation in the South American nation.

In a statement, the Venezuelan government said it was willing to move forward with constructive dialogue based on mutual respect, sovereign equality of states and cooperation between both countries.

Authorities in Caracas also expressed confidence that restoring diplomatic relations would strengthen understanding and open opportunities for a more positive relationship between the two nations.

Both sides are expected to gradually resume diplomatic missions and consular services as part of the renewed engagement process.
