The US Senate moved closer to confirming Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin as the next Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. On Sunday, the Senate voted 54-37 to limit debate on his nomination, paving the way for a final confirmation vote, expected Monday.

Mullin was nominated by President Donald Trump to replace Secretary Kristi Noem, who was dismissed on March 5. His nomination had earlier passed the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee despite opposition from the panel’s chair, Senator Rand Paul.

If confirmed, Mullin, a member of the Cherokee Nation, would become the second Native American to serve in the US Cabinet.
