The United States Department of State has approved a potential sale of advanced rocket systems and related military equipment to Sweden, according to an official announcement released on Tuesday.

The proposed deal involves the supply of the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, widely known as HIMARS, a highly mobile rocket launcher designed for precision long range strikes.

Officials said the principal contractor for the possible transaction would be US defence manufacturer Lockheed Martin.

The HIMARS system is capable of launching multiple rockets from a lightweight, highly mobile platform, allowing armed forces to strike targets at long distances while quickly repositioning to avoid counterattacks.

Defence analysts say the potential acquisition could strengthen Sweden’s long range strike capabilities as European countries continue to enhance their military readiness amid evolving regional security concerns.

The US government did not immediately disclose the total value of the proposed sale or the number of systems involved. The approval marks an initial step in the foreign military sales process, which may still require further agreements and finalisation between the two governments.
