Wife of the Chairman of Ukanafun Local Government Area and Head of the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Response Team, Mrs. Mokut Uyo Ukpanah, has strongly condemned the alleged assault on Ms. Rachael Samuel by her landlord, Mr. Hope Ekong.

Ukpanah described the incident, which reportedly occurred at the suspect’s residence on Hospital Road in Abak, Akwa Ibom State, as disturbing, unacceptable, stressing that violence against women must not be tolerated in society.

Ms. Samuel, an indigene of Ikot Ekpat in Ukanafun LGA, was allegedly assaulted and inflicted with bodily injuries by Ekong, who is said to be her landlord.

Reacting to the development, Ukpanah said she immediately intervened after being informed of the incident, reaching out to the victim, settling her hospital bills while ensuring that the case reported to the police was properly followed up.

She condemned the act as barbaric, a clear violation of the victim’s fundamental right to dignity and safety.

Ukpanah assured that her office would continue to pursue the matter with relevant authorities to ensure the suspect is held accountable in accordance with the law.

She also reaffirmed her commitment to protecting the rights of women and vulnerable persons across Ukanafun Local Government Area.

The chairman’s wife commended the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Noble Lady Helen Eno-Obareki, and Barrister Emem Ette of the State Gender-Based Violence Coordinating Committee for their swift intervention which led to the arrest of the suspect.

She also lauded the police for their professionalism in handling the case.

Ukpanah further called on members of the public to adopt peaceful means of resolving disputes, warning that violence in any form must be rejected in the interest of building a safer and more humane society.
