The United Kingdom Metropolitan Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the stabbing incident that led to the death of a 23-year-old Nigerian, John Temitope Onetufo, in London.
A statement from the Metropolitan Police website on Monday that the fatal incident occurred on New Year’s Eve in the Lewisham area of the city.
According to the police, officers were alerted to the incident at about 12:35p.m. following reports of a stabbing in Grove Street, Lewisham.
Upon the arrival of emergency responders at the scene, Onetufo was found with a stab wound to the chest and was immediately attended to by paramedics.
However, despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The statement read, “Police were called at around 12:35hrs on Wednesday, 31 December, following reports of a fatal stabbing in Grove Street, Lewisham.
“Officers attended the scene alongside the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance, where a 23-year-old man was treated for a stab wound to the chest. Sadly, despite condolences to the victim’s family and friends, assuring them of the police’s commitment to justice.
“I want to extend my deepest sympathies to John’s family and friends. We remain committed to finding answers, ensuring those responsible are brought to justice,” she added.
The killing has once again drawn attention to the persistent challenge of knife-related violence in the United Kingdom, which has claimed the lives of several individuals, including Nigerians, in recent years.
On August 6, 2025, that a 60-year-old Nigerian woman, Nkiru Chima, was found dead with multiple stab wounds in her apartment in Romford.
The Metropolitan Police had then disclosed that officers responded to a distress report from the British Transport Police and subsequently discovered Chima’s lifeless body in her residence.
