The United Kingdom has announced more than $6.6 million in emergency humanitarian assistance to support relief efforts in Lebanon as tensions escalate across the Middle East.
British Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper said the funding, amounting to over five million pounds, will support the Lebanese government and humanitarian agencies responding to the growing crisis.
According to Cooper, the funds will be channelled through organizations including the Lebanese Red Cross, the United Nations Lebanon Humanitarian Fund and the World Food Programme.
She said the financial support is aimed at strengthening humanitarian operations and assisting civilians affected by the regional conflict.
Cooper also condemned attacks by Hezbollah against Israel, urging the group to halt its operations.
“The actions of this proscribed terrorist group, at the instigation of the Iranian regime, are once again drawing the people of Lebanon into a conflict they do not want,” she said.
The British foreign secretary stressed the need for urgent diplomatic efforts to prevent the conflict from spreading further across the region.
She added that she had recently spoken with the Nawaf Salam, as well as Israeli officials and international partners, to discuss ways of de-escalating the situation.
Cooper also welcomed steps taken by the Lebanese government, including its decision to ban all military activities of Hezbollah, and said the UK would continue supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces and the Lebanese government in maintaining national security.
