Two people have been feared killed following renewed clashes between the Chobo and Bachaman communities in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

Confirming the incident on Sunday, the spokesperson for the Adamawa State Police Command, SP Suleiman Nguroje, said the violence erupted on Saturday night when suspected Chobo youths allegedly invaded Lamurde town and began shooting sporadically.

“We received a report last night that suspected Chobo youths invaded Lamurde town and were shooting sporadically, prompting the Bachaman youths to mobilise and confront them,” Nguroje said.

He added that heavily armed police personnel had been deployed to the area to restore calm and prevent further escalation of the crisis.

“We are yet to receive full casualty reports, but any development in that respect will be communicated immediately,” he stated.

The incident marks the latest escalation in a long-running land dispute between the two communities. In less than six months spanning last year and this year, more than 30 people, particularly women have reportedly lost their lives in related violence.

Last year, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri convened a meeting with leaders of the warring communities at the Government House in Yola in an effort to broker peace. However, violence reportedly resumed just three days after the truce was reached, leaving more than 18 people dead.

The state government had lifted a curfew in Lamurde last month after authorities believed normalcy had returned to the area.

Local sources said the two latest victims were killed in the early hours of Sunday while on their way to church.

As of the time of filing this report, the Adamawa State Government had yet to issue an official statement regarding the latest incident.
