Two children have lost their lives in separate fire incidents in Dutse, Jigawa State, while another outbreak was successfully contained without casualties.
The incidents were confirmed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Jigawa State Command, ASC Badruddeen Tijjani.
According to the statement, the first incident occurred at about 4:00 a.m. at Layin Dabinai, near Masallacin Malam Babba, where a fire engulfed rooms occupied by two children of Aminuddeen Abubakar, a staff member of the Federal University Dutse (FUD).
“Despite prompt emergency response efforts, the intensity of the fire made rescue impossible, and the two children were confirmed dead at the scene,” Tijjani said.
The NSCDC expressed condolences to the bereaved family and urged residents to adopt strict fire safety measures.
In a separate incident later the same day, a fire outbreak occurred around 12:00 noon in the Gida Dubu area, reportedly caused by an electrical spark in the kitchen of one Nura Garba.
Fortunately, no lives were lost as firefighters responded swiftly, containing the fire and preventing further damage, although some adjoining houses suffered destruction to kitchens and roofing structures.
The NSCDC said investigations are ongoing to determine the causes of both incidents and to recommend preventive measures.
The command also advised residents to exercise caution in handling electrical appliances and open flames, reiterating that fire safety is a collective responsibility.
