The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to the newly sworn-in National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki, has postponed its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to Wednesday, November 19.

The announcement followed heightened tension between the two rival factions of the party, both of which had fixed parallel NEC meetings for the same venue — the PDP National Secretariat at Wadata Plaza, Abuja.

Senator Samuel Anyanwu, an ally of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, had scheduled his faction’s NEC meeting for 10 am on Tuesday, with a Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting slated for 8 am. The Turaki group had equally fixed its NEC meeting for 8 am. This clash of schedules prompted Anyanwu to arrive at the secretariat earlier than planned, accompanied by a heavy security presence reportedly on ground as early as 7 am.

However, during a live broadcast early Tuesday, Turaki thanked PDP governors and party stakeholders for turning out for the meeting. He also commended the Nigeria Police Force for granting his team temporary access to the secretariat.

“I want to thank the Commissioner of Police for FCT. I told him that we were coming today to have our inaugural council meeting along with many of our party leaders to witness this historic moment,” Turaki said.

“I also informed him that I had seen on social media some fliers purporting to give notice of NEC and BoT meetings by people who are no longer members of this party, and he assured us of protection. I am happy that the Commissioner fulfilled his promise by allowing us into our secretariat.

“However, due to some incidents caused by enemies of progress and democracy, we have decided to postpone this meeting till tomorrow.”

Turaki concluded by calling for calm, insisting that the PDP remains a peace-loving party committed to restoring harmony within its ranks and across the country.
