United States President, Donald Trump has pledged not to sign any new legislation until Congress approves a bill introducing stricter voter identification requirements across the country.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he would withhold approval for other bills until lawmakers pass the proposed SAVE America Act, which aims to tighten rules governing voter registration and identification.
The legislation, which has already passed the United States House of Representatives, would require voters to provide stronger proof of citizenship when registering to vote and stricter identification when casting ballots.
The bill also proposes criminal penalties for election officials who register individuals without the required documentation and would require states to compare voter registration lists with a federal database to identify possible non-citizen voters.
The proposal is currently facing resistance in the United States Senate, where Democrats have vowed to block it. The chamber currently has 53 Republicans, 47 Democrats and allied independents, meaning the bill would need bipartisan support to reach the 60 votes required for passage.
Senate Minority Leader, Chuck Schumer criticized the legislation, describing it as “Jim Crow 2.0”, a reference to historical segregation-era laws in the United States that restricted voting rights for Black citizens.
Civil rights organizations have also warned that stricter documentation requirements could disenfranchise large segments of the population, noting that many Americans do not possess passports or other forms of proof of citizenship required under the proposal.
Trump has repeatedly argued that US elections are vulnerable to widespread fraud, although multiple investigations and court rulings have found little evidence of systemic voter fraud.
The issue has become central to the political debate ahead of the upcoming US midterm elections, which will determine whether Trump’s Republican Party retains control of Congress.
Meanwhile, several states are challenging requests by the United States Department of Justice to hand over voter registration rolls, arguing that the demands are unlawful.
Legal experts say any attempt by the President to impose voter identification rules through executive action could face immediate challenges in the courts.
