United States President, Donald Trump is set to embark on a three day official visit to China from March 31 to April 2, according to a statement from the White House.
The visit, which is at the invitation of Chinese authorities, will mark the first time a US president is travelling to Beijing since Trump’s previous trip in 2017 during his first term in office.
The White House confirmed the dates on Friday, noting that the trip comes amid what both Trump and Xi Jinping have described as positive communication between the two countries in recent months. Trump recently described the planned visit as one that would attract global attention.
The development comes shortly after the US Supreme Court struck down a series of global tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. The tariffs had been used as part of Washington’s strategy to pressure other countries in trade negotiations.
Trade relations are expected to feature prominently during discussions in Beijing. China has previously signalled possible retaliatory steps, including reducing purchases of US agricultural products such as soybeans.
In recent months, China has stepped up diplomatic engagement with Western leaders and strengthened its position in sectors such as electric vehicle production and renewable energy.
The US government continues to maintain support for Taiwan through arms sales and other forms of cooperation, an issue that remains sensitive in relations between Washington and Beijing.
This will be Trump’s first visit to China since the COVID 19 pandemic, which significantly affected global relations and economic activities. Since reopening its borders in 2023, China has intensified efforts to reengage with international partners.
Further details of the agenda for the visit are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
