U.S. President, Donald Trump says he may impose tariffs on countries that do not support his plan for the United States to control Greenland, citing national security concerns.
“I may put a tariff on countries if they don’t go along with Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security,” Trump said at a White House event, without providing further details on potential targets or timing.
Trump has repeatedly argued that Greenland’s strategic location and resources are critical to U.S. security interests, even as Denmark and Greenland have rejected attempts to alter the island’s status.
A bipartisan U.S. congressional delegation met with Danish and Greenlandic officials this week in Copenhagen to reduce tensions, but deep disagreements remain over Washington’s ambitions for the Arctic territory.
European leaders have warned that any U.S. action against Greenland’s sovereignty could strain alliances, disrupt trade and defence relations.
