United States President, Donald Trump has announced plans to increase the country’s military budget for the 2027 fiscal year to 1.5 trillion dollars, citing national security concerns, rising revenue from tariffs.
In a statement, Trump said the decision followed extensive negotiations with senators, congressmen, cabinet members, and other political leaders. He noted that the original proposal of a 1 trillion dollar defense budget was revised upward in what he described as the best interest of the country, particularly, during what he called “troubled and dangerous times.”
According to the president, the increased funding would enable the United States to build what he termed a “dream military,” capable of ensuring safety and security against any adversary.
Trump attributed the feasibility of the higher budget to increased revenue from tariffs imposed on other countries, which he said were previously benefiting unfairly, at the expense of the United States. He added that the additional income would also allow the government reduce national debt, provide financial support to moderate income Americans.
The President criticised the previous administration, claiming the current economic conditions and revenue levels would have been impossible a year earlier.
The proposal is expected to generate debate in Congress as discussions on the 2027 budget continue.
