Donald Trump is considering the possibility of withdrawing some United States troops from Europe as tensions continue within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
According to a senior official at the White House, discussions have taken place internally, although no final decision has been made and no directive has been issued to the Pentagon to begin planning a troop reduction.
The United States currently maintains more than 80,000 military personnel across Europe, forming a significant part of the continent’s security structure. Over 30,000 troops are stationed in Germany, with additional deployments in Italy, the United Kingdom and Spain.
The ongoing discussions come amid growing strain between Washington and its European allies within NATO. Recent engagements between Trump and NATO leadership have not produced any clear shift in relations.
Mark Rutte, who recently met with Trump, stated that many European countries have contributed to ongoing efforts related to the conflict involving Iran. However, expectations around further commitments remain under discussion.
The situation has been further complicated by disagreements over security responsibilities in key global locations, including the Strait of Hormuz, as well as unresolved matters involving Greenland.
The United States has played a central role in European defence since the end of World War Two, with its troop presence forming a major part of NATO’s operational capacity across the region.
No timeline or scope has been established for any potential troop adjustments, and discussions remain at an internal stage within the US administration.
