U.S. President, Donald Trump has cancelled all meetings with Iranian officials, called on protesters in Iran to “take over institutions,” amid ongoing nationwide demonstrations and a government crackdown.

The U.S. president has also threatened countries doing business with Iran with a 25 percent tariff. Trump did not provide further details on what “help” will involve.

Analysts warn the situation could escalate. Ali Vaez, director of the Iran Project at the International Crisis Group, said foreign intervention could create a power vacuum and risk violent chaos, noting the lack of organized opposition inside Iran.

The protests, Iran’s largest in years, have left hundreds of civilians dead, according to human rights groups, while state media report more than 100 security personnel killed. Internet blackouts continue to restrict information flow.

The unrest comes as Iran faces growing economic pressures, political unrest, with global markets monitoring potential disruptions.
