U.S. President Donald Trump has signalled that the United States is ready to resume efforts to mediate disputes over water sharing on the Nile River between Egypt and Ethiopia. In a letter to his Egyptian counterpart, Trump emphasised that no country in the region should have unilateral control over the river’s resources.

Trump’s statement comes amid ongoing tensions surrounding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which Egypt has long argued could threaten its water supply. Ethiopia maintains that the dam is essential for its energy needs and economic development.

“The United States is prepared to support all parties in finding a fair, cooperative, and sustainable solution,” Trump wrote. “No state in this region should unilaterally control the precious resources of the Nile.”

The U.S. has previously been involved in mediation efforts, along with the African Union and other international stakeholders, but negotiations have stalled in recent years amid disagreements over dam filling schedules and water management.

Egyptian and Ethiopian officials have welcomed international engagement, but both countries have also reaffirmed their positions on protecting national interests, highlighting the complexity of the dispute.

The renewed U.S. mediation effort signals Washington’s intent to play a more active role in facilitating dialogue, aiming to prevent further escalation and ensure equitable water distribution among Nile Basin countries.

Further discussions and meetings are expected in the coming weeks as stakeholders work towards a resolution.
