Suspected Boko Haram terrorists on Monday launched an attack on a military formation in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State, triggering panic among residents.

Sources said the attackers attempted to storm the 25 Task Force Brigade in the area at about 12:50a.m., in what appeared to be a coordinated assault on security positions.

The incident occurred less than 30 minutes after another attempted attack by suspected terrorists around Ajilari Cross and nearby communities in Maiduguri, the state capital. Residents later confirmed that the situation in Maiduguri was brought under control after security operatives repelled the attackers.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, said joint security forces successfully foiled the terrorists’ attempt to infiltrate Damboa.

“In another separate incident, at about 0100 hours, joint security operatives thwarted a suspected terrorist attack in Damboa LGA. Normalcy has been restored, and more details will follow,” he said.

Although official details were still sketchy, residents reported hearing sporadic gunshots near a military base during the night. One resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attackers were met with strong resistance from troops, preventing them from gaining access to the town.

The attempted attack comes about two weeks after terrorists reportedly overran and destroyed a military base in Ngoshe, leading to casualties and the displacement of residents.

Security analysts say the renewed attacks highlight ongoing security challenges in parts of the North-East, despite sustained counter-insurgency operations by the military and other agencies.

Authorities have assured residents that efforts are ongoing to maintain peace and strengthen security across affected communities.
