TINUBU RECONSTITUTES NERC BOARD, TASKS MEMBERS ON POWER SECTOR REFORMS

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reconstitution of the Board of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) following the confirmation of its members by the Senate on December 16, 2025.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga – the President charged the new board to deepen, consolidate ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s power sector in line with the provisions of the Electricity Act, 2023.

The reconstituted board is chaired by Dr. Musiliu Olalekan Oseni, who previously served as a Commissioner from January 2017, later as Vice Chairman of the Commission. His appointment as Chairman took effect from December 1, 2025, will subsist until the completion of his ten-year statutory tenure.

Dr. Yusuf Ali was named Vice Chairman of the Commission. He was first appointed as a Commissioner in February 2022, with his new designation taking effect from December 1, 2025, until the end of his first term.

Other members of the reconstituted board include Mr. Nathan Rogers Shatti, Mr. Dafe Akpeneye, and Aisha Mahmud Kanti Bello, all of whom are serving second terms as Commissioners, having been first appointed between 2017 and 2020.

Also on the board is Dr. Chidi Ike, who is serving his first term after being appointed in February 2022, and Dr. Fouad Animashaun, whose first term as Commissioner commenced in December 2025.

Dr. Animashaun is an energy economist with extensive experience in Nigeria’s power sector and most recently served as Executive Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

President Tinubu urged the board to strengthen regulatory oversight, enhance efficiency, and sustain reforms aimed at improving electricity supply nationwide, stressing the need for strict adherence to the letter, spirit of the Electricity Act, 2023.

The reconstitution of the NERC board is part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to reposition the electricity sector for improved performance, transparency, service delivery.
