President Bola Tinubu has indefinitely suspended his planned diplomatic visits to South Africa and Angola following fresh security breaches in Kebbi and Kwara States.
The President was scheduled to leave Abuja today for Johannesburg to participate in the 20th G20 Summit, after which he was expected to proceed to Luanda for the 7th AU-EU Summit.
However, in a statement issued on Wednesday, the Presidency confirmed that the trips have been put on hold to enable the President receive comprehensive security briefings and coordinate the government’s response to the attacks.
According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu took the decision after receiving disturbing reports on the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the deadly attack on worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church, Eruku, in Kwara State.
The postponement also follows a formal request from the Kwara State Governor for federal intervention. President Tinubu has ordered the urgent deployment of additional security personnel to Eruku and the wider Ekiti Local Government Area. He has further directed the police to launch a full-scale manhunt for the bandits responsible for the church attack.
The President awaits detailed updates from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Kebbi State on his behalf, as well as situational reports from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) on the violence in Kwara.
On the Kebbi abduction, President Tinubu reaffirmed his directive to security agencies to deploy all necessary resources to ensure the safe rescue of the 24 abducted schoolgirls and bring the perpetrators to justice.
