President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday night held a closed-door meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) at the State House, Abuja as the organized labour intensifies plans for a nationwide protest over unresolved demands.

The meeting comes amid rising tensions between the Federal Government and labour unions over workers’ welfare, the soaring cost of living, delays in implementing previously agreed concessions.

Confirming the engagement, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the meeting was attended by key stakeholders, including the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma; Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo; Governor of Kebbi State, Dr Nasir Idris; and the Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.

According to the statement, the NLC delegation was led by its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero.

The meeting followed the NLC’s recent warning to embark on mass protests across the country, citing the Federal Government’s alleged failure to adequately address issues such as wage concerns, relief measures to cushion the effects of economic reforms and worsening socio-economic hardships faced by Nigerian workers.

Organized labour has accused the government of stalling the implementation of agreements reached in earlier negotiations, warning that continued delays could spark industrial unrest, street demonstrations in major cities.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Federal Government nor the NLC leadership had disclosed details of the discussions or the outcome of the meeting.
