President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Mr Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, as the new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the Federal Ministry of Justice.

The appointment was confirmed in a letter dated December 23, signed by Omolabake Mafe on behalf of the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC), which approved Oyedepo’s transfer from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the mainstream Federal Civil Service in the public interest.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Director of Information and Public Relations at the State House, Mr Abiodun Oladunjoye – Oyedepo will assume office following the retirement of the incumbent DPP, Mr Abubakar Babadoko, who is scheduled to exit the service on December 31, 2025, after completing the mandatory eight-year tenure as a Director.

The statement noted that Oyedepo’s appointment is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the prosecutorial capacity of the Federal Ministry of Justice, enhance efficiency in handling high-profile and sensitive cases.

“Mr Oyedepo is a 2007 Law graduate of the University of Ilorin and was called to the Bar after attending the Nigerian Law School in 2008,” the statement said.

It added that the new DPP is expected to deploy his extensive prosecutorial experience to reduce the Federal Government’s reliance on external legal counsel in critical cases, while ensuring greater coherence and consistency in the government’s legal strategies.

Before his appointment, Oyedepo spent over 15 years at the EFCC, where he specialized in the prosecution of complex economic and financial crimes.

He also served as Head of the Monitoring Unit of the Commission.

He was a member of the Federal Government’s legal team in the landmark Process and Industrial Development (P&ID) Limited versus the Federal Republic of Nigeria case, which helped Nigeria avert a multibillion-dollar arbitral award.
