The Government and citizens of Thailand have expressed disappointment following the United States’ announcement of an indefinite suspension of immigrant visa applications from 75 countries, including Thailand. The freeze affects both employment (EB-class) and spousal/dependent (K-class) visas, disrupting migration plans for work, family reunification, and permanent residency.

Several affected individuals voiced frustration at the sudden policy change. Ms. Khaochat Mankong, 27, had planned to relocate to Calif or is to join her American spouse, while Mr. Songtham Artsomjit, 26, had invested USD 800 in visa processing for work in Wisconsin. Both now face uncertain futures.

Thailand, a longstanding US treaty ally since 1833, raised concerns about the policy’s rationale, noting the economic contributions of Thai migrants in the United States. Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow engaged US diplomatic officials to seek clarification, highlighting potential negative impacts on bilateral relations.

Analysts suggest the suspension reflects a broader strategy by the Trump administration to restrict legal migration. Human rights advocates described the policy as “crass and harsh,” warning it could impose significant barriers for prospective migrants while straining longstanding diplomatic partnerships.
