A teenager, whose identity has not been immediately disclosed, died in a swimming pool at a hotel along the Osogbo-Gbongan Road in Owode-Ede, Osun State, on Thursday, sparking protests from family members and friends.
According to sources, the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death remain unclear.
Reports indicate that some people, displeased with how the hotel management handled the incident, stormed the hotel on Friday to stage a protest.
Witnesses confirmed that timely intervention by the police and operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) prevented the protest from escalating into a major crisis. An eyewitness told PUNCH Online:
“The death was recorded in the hotel on January 1. The deceased, a teenager, died in the swimming pool.
On Friday, some people displeased with the hotel management’s handling of the situation staged a serious protest. Police and NSCDC later intervened, resolved the matter.”
The Osun State Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Giwa-Alade, confirmed the incident, described it as a grievance visit to the family, not a mob action.
“The victim died in the hotel’s swimming pool. The family went back to express their grievances, and the matter was later settled amicably,” Giwa-Alade said.
He added that an investigation has commenced, assured the public that updates would be provided, once findings are concluded.
