The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has won the country’s parliamentary election with a resounding majority, positioning party leader, Tarique Rahman to become the next prime minister, according to preliminary results.
Election results published by The Dhaka Tribune and Prothomalo English on Saturday indicate that the BNP secured a decisive victory, dominating constituencies across the country. Official results are yet to be formally announced.
Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus congratulated Rahman on the “landslide victory of his party” and said he would step down to allow the elected government to take office. Yunus, 85, who has served as chief adviser since the August 2024 uprising, described Rahman as a leader who “would help guide the country toward stability, inclusiveness, and development.”
The opposition Jamaat-e-Islami party issued a statement acknowledging the overall outcome, despite raising concerns over certain aspects of the vote count. Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman said, “We recognise the overall outcome, and we respect the rule of law.”
This election is the first major national vote since the 2024 uprising and represents a significant political shift in Bangladesh, as citizens anticipate the formation of a new government under Rahman’s leadership.
