Sweden will spend 15 billion Swedish crowns ($1.6 billion) on air defence systems to protect civilians, critical infrastructure, the government announced.

Defence Minister, Pal Jonson said the move is informed by lessons from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, highlighting the importance of robust, resilient air defence. The systems will focus on short-range protection for cities, bridges, power plants, and other key facilities.

Jonson spoke at a security conference in northern Sweden, emphasizing the need for preparedness against aerial threats across the country’s vast territory.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also addressed international concerns, criticizing what he described as the U.S. administration’s threatening rhetoric against Greenland and Denmark, underscoring Denmark’s role as a loyal ally.

The investment reflects Sweden’s continued effort to strengthen national security in the wake of rising regional tensions, evolving military threats.
