The Super Eagles of Nigeria will return to action on Friday when they take on Iran in an international friendly at the Antalya Stadium in Turkey, marking their first outing since winning bronze at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The encounter, part of a four-nation invitational tournament involving Jordan and Costa Rica, offers an early indication of the team’s rebuilding process under head coach Eric Chelle.

Nigeria head into the match with a slight historical edge, having recorded one win and one draw in their previous two meetings with Iran. Their last clash ended in a goalless draw during the group stage of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Despite missing out on qualification for the 2026 World Cup following a penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo, the Super Eagles have shown signs of recovery, finishing third at AFCON 2025 after beating Egypt in the bronze medal match.

The team has also maintained an unbeaten run in 15 competitive matches under Chelle, reflecting gradual progress as the coach reshapes the squad.

Friday’s fixture is expected to serve as a testing ground for new combinations and emerging players, with several key absences forcing a reshuffle.

Top striker Victor Osimhen is unavailable, while defenders Ola Aina and Calvin Bassey are also out. First-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali misses the game as well, alongside several other regulars.

However, the changes have opened opportunities for new entrants, including uncapped players Emmanuel Fernandez, Philip Otele, Yira Sor and Chibuike Nwaiwu.

Midfielder Alex Iwobi is expected to play a central role as he nears his 100th international appearance, while Semi Ajayi is likely to lead the defence.

In attack, Ademola Lookman is set to provide creativity, with Paul Onuachu expected to spearhead the forward line in Osimhen’s absence.

Iran, meanwhile, arrive in mixed form, winless in their last three matches, although they have already secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup. Off-field challenges linked to geopolitical tensions have also affected their preparations.

For both teams, the friendly presents an opportunity to build momentum, but for Nigeria in particular, the focus remains on long-term development and squad depth as Chelle continues to shape his team.
