What began as a Christmas street celebration in Uyo on Tuesday gradually unfolded into an act of economic support for small business owners, as five residents received cash grants of ₦500,000 each at a public event held in the Maitama area of Ewet Housing Estate.
The Street of Maitama, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, witnessed what attendees, beneficiaries described as a first of its kind celebration, as residents poured out in large numbers for the event, tagged “Maitama, Uyo Street Party for the Gift of Godswill Akpabio and Pastor Umo Eno”.
The street party, organized by Lady Edu Offong, convener of the Godswill Akpabio Ambassadors, was staged in honour of Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno.
Thousands of residents gathered at the popular Maitama axis, drawn by music, shared excitement, the familiar warmth – associated with the Christmas season.
For Lady Offong, the gathering was deeply personal. She described the event as a way of expressing gratitude for the progress she has experienced in her life, an opportunity to give back at a time traditionally associated with sharing, compassion.
She spoke warmly of Senate President Akpabio, whom she referred to as a benefactor, father figure, saying his encouragement and support had shaped her journey, touched the lives of many.
She also praised Governor Umo Eno’s leadership, pointing to what she described as a calmer political environment, visible developmental efforts across Akwa Ibom State.
A major highlight of the event was the empowerment of five individuals with ₦500,000 each to help them either begin or expand their businesses.
Lady Offong said the gesture was intended to move beyond celebration, create lasting impact, urging the beneficiaries to use the funds wisely, to remember others when they are in a position to lend support.
One of the recipients, Marshal Ema, popularly known as Maado, expressed appreciation for the intervention, saying the support would significantly strengthen his business.
He thanked the organizers, prayed for continued strength and blessings for the leaders being honoured, noting that their influence had encouraged a culture of giving within the community.

Other beneficiaries of the empowerment initiative were Mary Victor Sambo, Sally John, Utibe Edet and Enam Idem.
As the Christmas music faded, the crowd slowly dispersed, the Maitama street party left behind more than memories of celebration.
It serves as a reminder that festive gatherings can also be a platforms for lifting lives, turning moments of joy into opportunities for growth and renewed hope.
