Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Udeme Otong, recently sparked controversy with a statement regarding the allocation of election tickets for Assembly members. Speaking publicly, he claimed that he already holds the tickets of all 26 Assembly members, a full year ahead of the next elections. According to him, these tickets have been signed, secured, are effectively in his possession.

The statement has drawn significant criticism, as it appears to undermine the democratic process, the principle of free, fair elections. Critics argue that elections are meant to reflect the collective choice of voters and party members, not the private discretion of an individual.
