Spain has withdrawn its ambassador from Israel amid rising diplomatic tensions linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

The decision was announced in Spain’s official state gazette, which confirmed the termination of the appointment of Ambassador Ana María Sálomon Pérez following a meeting of the Spanish Council of Ministers.

Spain’s embassy in Tel Aviv will now be temporarily headed by a charge d’affaires, according to officials from the Spanish Foreign Ministry.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has been among the European leaders strongly criticising the military actions carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran, describing the escalation as unjustifiable and reiterating Spain’s opposition to the war.

Madrid has also maintained strong criticism of Israel’s military operations in Gaza. Spain’s parliament previously approved legislation establishing a permanent arms embargo on Israel, banning the sale of weapons, military equipment and dual-use technology.

The diplomatic move highlights growing divisions within the European Union over the widening conflict in the Middle East.
