Kaduna based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has denied claims that he was targeted by the United States during recent airstrikes on terrorist groups in Sokoto State.

In a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Sunday, Gumi clarified that reports circulating on social media were based on an old viral video, which he had previously spoken about threats to his life in the context of the Boko Haram insurgency.

“There is fake news going viral now which wrongly claims that I said I was targeted by the U.S. attack on Nigerian soil, or something to that effect. I never said so, I also never thought of such a possibility,” Gumi wrote.

The cleric explained that Boko Haram elements allegedly attempted to kill him in 2012, stressing that the incident had no connection to the recent airstrikes.

“I am comfortably staying in my home with my family, without fear, intimidation, or apprehension,” he added.
“The two people who came to execute the plan in 2012 were killed instantly when the bomb detonated in their hands near my house.”

Gumi urged news outlets that reported the misinformation to retract their stories, issue apologies.

He emphasized that his life is not currently under threat, contrary to claims circulating online.
